It is always flattering and fun when you do one project and the neighbor peeks over the fence and decides they want something similar. The neighbors are great friends, but do not want to the same garden, so despite a mirror layout we were tasked with creating something new – similar space, different execution.

With this project, the client did not only want the outside to look beautiful from the inside but requested that the space be able to function much the same as an indoor space would function – incorporating a kitchen area, lounge area, workspace and garden into one backyard. We were able to create dignified, separate spaces by creating an L-shaped pergola, which allows the client to see the whole garden from every position in the garden yet feel the intimacy of each space.

The pergola posts were held up by custom designed planters which aided in establishing separate sections, while unifying the entire patio through plant selection and design. For some contrast, we brought in beautiful blue ceramic planters to break up the linear wood elements and add a pop of color.

In this space one truly feels like they are apart of the garden from the large vegetable boxes to the abundance of hydrangeas and sprawly junipers. The garden feels wild yet contained, intimate, and cohesive. Some of our favorite elements include the ipe “area rugs” – another linear and patterned element – the custom shade cloth, which can fully open for added shade coverage and privacy, and the custom kitchen cement countertop and cement tile backsplash to bring in the industrial Williamsburg style.
